Presented by the State Bar Association of North Dakota and its Young Lawyers Division. Documenting a client file involves the use of memos, emails, letters, written agreements, and on the record stipulations to memorialize key events which have taken place (or will take place) in a file. It sounds boring. It sounds tedious. To some extent, it is both. When you learn the benefits of documenting your client files, however, you will soon appreciate that the positives of documentation far outweigh the time and effort it takes to properly document. One major benefit to documenting is that it will help make you a better lawyer and help you to better serve your clients. An added, but not unimportant benefit, is that it will help you avoid disciplinary complaints and malpractice actions. Even in the age of electronic communications and paperless files, documentation is still relevant and important. Consider investing an hour to learn how to Document, Document, and Document.

Presenter is David S. Maring, Bismarck, a shareholder in Maring Williams Law Office, P.C., with Bismarck attorney Aaron Nicholson as moderator.
