2013 Bankruptcy Law Update Join us for an informative session on bankruptcy law in North Dakota. As a result of this program attendees will: 1) Get a quick creditor’s rights update; 2) Get a case update; 3) Hear from a large volume debtor’s counsel about how to file and manage debtor cases; 4) Hear from a bankruptcy trustee about how cases progress with the trustee; 5) Use a flow chart/ key to follow the steps a creditor should take to react to various types of bankruptcy cases; 6) Know the steps to take right away and the things to get on your calendar when you are representing a creditor who sends you a notice of a case filing; 7) Know the usual things to look out for when representing a creditor in the various types of bankruptcy cases.

Attention Young Lawyers Section, although this program will address advanced topics, it will also serve as an excellent introduction to Chapters 7 & 13, with a particularly useful and complete introductory

Speakers:
Mr. Bruce L Madlom
is a sole practitioner at Madlom Law Office in Fargo, where he has practiced in the areas of bankruptcy, debt negotiation, family law, personal injury and general practice. Mr. Madlom has worked exclusively as a consumer bankruptcy attorney, and his practice is focused primarily on consumer Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases, and small business bankruptcy law. Mr. Madlom earned his B.S. degree from North Dakota State University and his J.D. degree from the University of North Dakota. He is a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), and the State Bar Association of North Dakota.
Hon. Shon Kaelberer Hastings
was appointed United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of North Dakota in September 2011. Judge Hastings began her legal career as Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Karen K. Klein, United States Magistrate Judge. After her clerkship, she joined Bowman and Brook, LLC, a law firm headquarted in Minneapolis, MN. From January 1998 until her appointment, Judge Hastings worked an Assistant United States Attorney in Fargo, ND. She was appointed Chief of the Civil Division in January 2009. Judge Hastings’ professional activities with the Department of Justice included serving as a member of the Civil Chiefs Working Group and EOUSA Financial Litigation and Asset Preservation Working Groups. She also assisted the Evaluation and Review Staff with peer review of other United States Attorneys’ Offices. Judge Hastings frequently served as a faculty member at the DOJ National Advocacy Center, speaking on financial litigation-related issues.
Mr. Kyle Lynn Carlson
is currently a Chapter 12 and 13 Bankruptcy Trustee for the District of Minnesota. He was appointed by the United States Department of Justice-United States Trustee Program in 2008. He received his B.S. from North Dakota State University in 1995 and his J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1998. From 1998 to 2008, he was an attorney in the law firm of Anderson, Bottrell, Sanden and Thompson in Fargo, North Dakota, where he practiced primarily in the debtor/creditor and bankruptcy areas. He is a member of the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees.
Mr. Michael Leonard Gust
is a shareholder with Anderson, Bottrell, Sanden & Thompson. He concentrates his practice in the areas of bankruptcy, debtor-creditor law, commercial law, and banking law. Mike graduated from North Dakota State University in 1998 with a B.S. in Business Administration and graduated, with distinction, from the UND School of Law in 2001. Prior to joining Anderson, Bottrell, Sanden & Thompson, Mike worked as a law clerk to Judge William A. Hill, United States Bankruptcy Court, District of North Dakota. While with Judge Hill, Mike was a member of the bankruptcy local rules committee. He has been asked to serve in a similar position by Judge Hastings for the next round of revisions. Prior to his work with Judge Hill, Mike practiced civil litigation at a large Minneapolis law firm.
