Volunteer Lawyers Program
To
apply for services, please call the Centralized Intake Office at
1-800-634-5263.
You may also fill out an application on line at
www.legalassist.org
No attorney client relationship is established by submitting an application.
Information provided in the application is not subject to the attorney-client
privilege.
You may be able to find legal help by calling the combined Central Intake line for Legal Services of North Dakota and the State Bar Association of North Dakota. The staff at Central Intake will interview you over the phone to determine the nature of your legal question. Clients must meet income guidelines to qualify for all programs. By completing an application you are applying for services provided by both organizations, Legal Services of North Dakota (LSND) and the Volunteer Lawyer Program of the State Bar Association of North Dakota (SBAND).
The SBAND Volunteer Lawyer Program consists of two separate entities: the Reduced Fee Program and Pro Bono Program (both of these determine eligibility for services based on income level and other various criteria). If you qualify under our Volunteer Lawyer Program your application will be sent to SBAND; you will also receive a letter in the mail that informs you that you have qualified and that it is entirely your responsibility to contact SBAND. If you have not contacted SBAND within ten (10) days, your application will be closed.
If you qualify under the Reduced Fee Program, you will be required to pay the attorney a retainer up front, and you will be billed at a reduced hourly rate. You will also be responsible for court fees and other costs, including but not limited to, filing fees, postage, mileage, photocopying and long-distance phone charges.
It is important to understand there are a limited number of lawyers in the program, it is not a guaranteed program, and there may not be a volunteer lawyer available to help in your area. Your application will closed in 8 weeks if no attorney is available to take your case.
