Reduced Fee Program

Legal problems can be overwhelming when you don't know where to turn for help. You may be able to find legal help by calling the State Bar Association's Reduced Fee Program.

The helpful staff will interview you over the phone to determine the nature of your legal question. Clients must meet income guidelines to qualify for the program. If you qualify, you will be contacted by mail with the name and number of an attorney to contact. It is your responsibility to make an appointment with the attorney for a consultation about your issues. If an attorney is not available for your legal matter, you may be advised of the option of a regular full-fee referral through the Lawyer Referral Service. It is important to understand there are a limited number of lawyers in the program and there may not be a Reduced Fee attorney in your area.

Types of cases referred through the Reduced Fee Program include:

  • divorce
  • custody
  • simple wills without trusts
  • husband & wife wills
  • power of attorney
  • post divorce motions
  • uncontested adoptions
  • name change

If you hire an attorney through the Reduced Fee Program, you will be asked to pay a retainer (deposit against fees) up front. You will also be responsible for court fees and other costs, such as photocopying expenses, postage and long-distance phone charges. Some cases also require that you pay a reduced hourly rate.

The Reduced Fee Program is a public service of the State Bar Association of North Dakota. To reach the Reduced Fee Program call 1-800-932-8880 or (701) 255-1406.
