If you need an attorney or think you have a legal problem, the Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS) is here to help.
The Lawyer Referral and Information Services (LRIS) is a public service provided by the State Bar Association of North Dakota. The program is intended to match paying clients in need of legal services, with appropriate lawyers to handle their legal problems. The goal of Lawyer Referral Service is to refer members of the public to attorneys who are competent to handle their particular legal needs. Lawyer Referral Service bridges the gap between attorneys and the public.
How Lawyer Referral Works
1. The first step in finding a lawyer is to call 1-866-450-9579 (toll free). Your call will be answered by a referral information specialist who will need your name, address, phone number and will ask you to briefly state your legal problem. They will also need to know what town/county you need an attorney in.
2. In order to obtain a referral, you must first provide us with your $30 payment via mail or credit card. For this $30 you will receive an attorney’s name, phone number and a 30-minute consultation with the attorney in the area of law of your choice and town/ county of your choice.
3. Once your payment has been received, we will mail you a confirmation letter. The letter will state the name and phone number of a North Dakota attorney for you to contact. The attorney will also receive a letter. The lawyer will be licensed and a member in good standing with the State Bar Association of North Dakota. It will then be your responsibility to call the lawyer to schedule an appointment.
4. When you call the attorney to schedule a meeting, be sure to tell them that you were referred by the State Bar Association of North Dakota’s Lawyer Referral Program.
5. After the initial half-hour, it is up to you and the attorney to negotiate fees if you decide to authorize the lawyer to take action on your legal problem. The $30 will not cover any legal services or representation beyond the initial consultation, and you should discuss those additional fees with the attorney.
PLEASE NOTE: The Lawyer Referral and Information Services staff person is not an attorney and cannot give you legal advice. They can only refer you to an attorney.
