Day 1 - Volunteer Lawyer Program Day

Happy Celebrate Pro Bono Week!

All across the country this week, the legal profession is celebrating the importance of pro bono and increasing the awareness to access to justice. In North Dakota, we will highlight the need and importance of pro bono in our great state.

If you're not sure where to start, you should check out SBAND's Volunteer Lawyer Program (VLP), which for many is the best way to start learning about and engaging in pro bono. Our VLP also allows you to take a case on a reduced fee basis (this is a great way to also help those in need).

It's not just family law (although there's a lot of it). If you simply sign up for the VLP this week (there's no commitment to take a case ... yet), you will be entered into a drawing to win a Visa Gift Card!

Here's the signup form for the VLP.

Have a fun week celebrating pro bono in North Dakota!

Day 2 - Legal Services of North Dakota Day

If you want to know where rubber hits the road when it comes to providing legal services for those who can afford it least, Legal Services of North Dakota is your first stop. Here are a few things every lawyer needs to know about LSND:

  1. 6,791 Applications for Legal Help Were Received in 2016. 67% were provided some form of legal assistance (with only 10 lawyers!)
  2. LSND handles intake for SBAND's Volunteer Lawyer Program.
  3. Any licensed lawyer can help, will you be one?
  4. LSND has been operations for 13 years and has been able to provide legal assistance to close to 60,000 applicants!
  5. Supporting LSND is easy - just send a check to 418 E. Broadway #7, Bismarck, ND 58501.

If you want to get involved with LSND, give Rich LeMay a call at (701) 222-2110. He can tell you about great programs like the private lawyer involvement program.

Day 3 - Write a Check to the ND Bar Foundation Day

Happy Celebrate Pro Bono Week!

Today is even easier than yesterday. All we're asking you to do is write a check to the North Dakota Bar Foundation for the support of pro bono services in North Dakota. Or, you can donate online through the Bar Foundation's page found here. Simply designate in the comments the money is for the Pro Bono Fund.

Did you know that a donation of just $85 provides one hour of legal services to someone who can't afford it? Any money you send will be deposited into the Pro Bono Fund, which is used to support Legal Services of North Dakota's Private Attorney Involvement Program.

If you want more information before donating, feel free to give Tony at SBAND a call at 701-255-1404. If you want to write a check, send it to:

ND Bar Foundation
PO Box 2136
Bismarck, ND 58502-2136

Oh, and there is no rule keeping you from writing a check even if you've already written one (or two!) this year.

  1. Have you signed up for the Volunteer Lawyer Program yet? (A Visa gift card is at stake!)

Day 4 - The Justice for All Lawyer Program

Happy Celebrate Pro Bono Week!

Any lawyer who provides at least 50 hours of pro bono legal services per calendar year will be designated a Justice for All Lawyer. Members who report their voluntary service will be recognized and included on an annual roster published in The Gavel. In addition, the Justice for All Lawyers will be recognized at the SBAND Annual Meeting.

Here's the reporting form.

We have had a great week celebrating pro bono. You can give yourself a high five for:

  2. Day 2 - Learning about the critical services Legal Services of North Dakota provides!
  3. Day 3 - Considering supporting the ND Bar Foundation to support pro bono!
